Mavin Act, Johnny Drille Reveals Why Don Jazzy Signed Him

Residents of Abuja, lovers and fans of Johnny Drille, were thrilled to a “Johnny Drille and Friends” session on Monday 19th February, 2018.

The event which held at the Classic Rock Cafe, Wuse 2, Abuja hosted an interesting crowd with beautiful faces.

Born John Ighodaro, Drille answered questions from fans and shared a little bit about himself. He spoke about the hustle in the music business, how he hooked up with Mavin boss, Don Jazzy, what inspires his lyrics and a couple others.

Interestingly, the Wait For Me singer, disclosed that he had been producing since 2006 but his first contact with Don Jazzy was in January, 2015. He further added that he had sent Jazzy a couple of songs to listen to and he got a positive feed back from the Mavin boss.

In his words;

“My first contact with jazzy was in January 2015, I kept sending Jazzy my music.

It took time to reply sometimes but sometimes the replies come quick.

Jazzy signed me cause he loved my sound and he knew people loved it to.”

He added that he kept pushing until August, 2016 when he got a message saying he should come over.

On the hustle in the music business, Johnny said he spent so much on transportation in Lagos but was not discouraged. He kept faith that people will appreciate his sound.

A curious fan who had pondered why the singers lyrics were different from other acts, asked how his music comes to him.

Johnny Drille replied saying;

“I have to be inspired by something to write, sometimes I sing nonsense but later come back and put words into it.”

John Ighodaro, better known as Johnny Drille was born and raised in Edo State, Nigeria. He is from a family of seven including a clergy father and mother. He graduated from the University of Benin in 2012 where he majored in English and Literature.

He is a folk/alternative singer, songwriter, producer, and sound engineer. He started out music from his father’s Church at a very early age, and learned to sing around his siblings especially his older sister. He then went on to teach himself music production around 2006 when he first began using cassette recorders.

He was a contestant on the 6th Edition of the MTN Project Fame Academy in 2013.

As an artist, Johnny had been putting out songs but they had gone unnoticed until January 2015 when he released his cover version of Di’ja’s ‘Awww’ which caught Don Jazzy’s attention. The Mavin Records’ huncho followed him on Twitter to commend him. That became his first contact with Mavin Records’ CEO.
