In a heartbreaking case, a 2-month-old child was abducted in Johannesburg after a woman gave the mother money to buy the child a pair of socks. News 24 reports that this incident happened at a store in the city’s Central Business District.
The Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele, while confirming the incident yesterday, said that the mother was carrying the daughter on her back in Kliptown area of the city when she met the supposedly kind woman who befriended her.
“She was carrying her child on her back and after she left a store she met a lady who introduced herself and told her that she hailed from Lesotho,” Xoli Mbele said. “She [the victim] trusted her because she also comes from Lesotho.”
Together, the women went to a close by Pep store where the mother of the child, trusting the stranger, let her hold her child after the stranger gave her R20 (N255) to buy some socks for the baby.
“She went inside and left her with the child, when the mother came out the child and the woman were nowhere to be found,” Mbele said.
The stranger is yet to be found.
