Beyonce and Jay-Z Lose Blue Ivy Trademark Battle

Fox News Boston reports that Beyoncé and Jay-Z lost their legal battle to have their 10-month old daughter Blue Ivy’s name trademarked last week.

The power couple attempted to trademark her name shortly after her birth in January; however, a small Boston party planning firm called Blue Ivy Events stepped in and sued the parents, stating that it has been operating under the name since 2009.

As per the ruling, Beyoncé and Jay-Z will have no legal rights to market the name. It is said a “Blue Ivy” baby product line was planned for the trademark.

Many note their surprise that the local company was not forced to forfeit their name to the famous couple; had Blue Ivy Events lost the case, it would have had to find a new name.

“I really thought this would be a case of the biggest pockets,” a Fox News reporter said.

In fact, the two topped the Forbes’ list as the richest celebrity couple in the last year, having earned $78 million in 2011.

Fox News suggests that Blue Ivy Events may see a spike in business after the high profile case.

Other options for Beyoncé and Jay-Z may be to pay the company to give up its trademark, or to have them share the name; again most likely for a fee, with the event planning firm getting a small portion if Blue Ivy royalties.

The Huffington Post recommends that the couple do a Google search before naming any other children they may have.
