Mexico City Introduces Pen*s Seats In Public Trains In A Bid To Curb Sexual Violence Against Women
According to a survey taken in 2016, it was discovered that Mexico’s capital city is the worst place for verbal and physical harassment on public transit worldwide.
The report said that women are subject to threats and sexual harassment on a daily basis on the transport system, and when such incidents are reported to security officials, not enough is done to guarantee their safety.
In response to this, the city has launched the #NoEsDeHombres campaign to teach men the discomfort of being a woman on public transit. The campaign has led to the introduction of penis seats on the subway, which are designed “exclusively for men”. The aim of this is to show men what it’s like to be uncomfortable in a shared space.
The sign under the seat reads: “It is uncomfortable to sit here, but that is nothing compared to the sexual violence that women suffer on their daily journeys.”
A representative at UN Women, Ana Güezmes said “What we were looking for was to generate empathy from men, based on what women live with daily in the public transport”. The project is part of their “Safe Cities and Public Spaces for Women and Girls” initiative, which is taking place in 25 cities throughout the world.
She added that “The message is to all men who violate and control women, or consider that saying inappropriate things to women is part of their manhood.”
