Defending champion Serena Williams is out of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, after losing to 20th-ranked Ukrainian Elina Svitolina.
World number one Serena Williams lost a tough third round match against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina on Tuesday night, 6-4, 6-3, ending her bid to become the first tennis player to collect a pair of singles golds.
Speaking after the game, Williams said,. “It was a great opportunity. It didn’t work out the way I wanted it to, but at least I was able to make it to Rio. That was one of my goals.”
Although she won gold medals in singles and doubles at the 2012 London Olympics, Williams heads home from Brazil with nothing as she and her older sister Venus also lost in the first round of doubles.
Svitolina never before played in the Olympics and has only been to a major quarterfinal once
