The Lagos State Government has reportedly declared that arrangements are being made to provide security for traditional rulers in the state. The decision was as a result of the kidnap of the Oniba of Iba land, Oba Goriola Oseni.
Although, he was released on Saturday after a ransom of N15.1m was paid to the abductors.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami reportedly stated that the government was determined to ensure what happened to the Iba monarch, did not repeat itself in other palaces, adding that security of the traditional institution was important to the government.
The commissioner was reported to have said,
“The government had provided a lot of equipment for the police to perform effectively. We are convinced that the police are on top of the situation to secure the state.”
The commissioner thanked God that the monarch was released unhurt, adding that the government was concerned throughout the period the monarch was in the kidnappers’ den. He said the state worked with the police to ensure the monarch’s release.
He said part of the government’s efforts to secure the state was to open up the rural areas by embarking on the construction of 114 rural roads across the councils, adding that by such, there would be no hiding place for mischievous persons.
The monarch therefore, reportedly appealed to the government to provide security at the grass roots, saying that the police post in the community had not been upgraded.
He said he had never seen such sophisticated weapons used by his kidnappers with any police officer, adding that the kidnappers were mostly teenagers. The Monarch speaking said,
“When I advised them that they ought to be in school rather than engage in such act, they told me that they did not have money for school and they were interested in making money,”
