Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced in a fresh hearing to 6 years in prison for “culpable homicide” of his live-in girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
He faced up to 15 years in prison but the judge said there were “substantial and compelling reasons” to deviate from the 15-year minimum sentence, citing as one factor, the continuing misperception that Pistorius had intended to kill his girlfriend. She said a a long-term imprisonment will not serve justice as Oscar is already a broken man…a fallen hero.
He may be eligible for parole and may not have to serve the full term in prison. However, The Steenkamp family looked stunned that Oscar only received 6 years but said nothing.
On 19 August 2013 Oscar Pistorius was officially charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The Paralympic champion admitted shooting her on Valentine’s Day but denied murder, saying he believed she was an intruder. On 12 September 2014, he was found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter.
