Early statistics are already in for Sunday’s Oscars awards, and with just 34.3 million viewers, the Chris Rock-hosted event recorded it’s second-lowest rated on record.

This means that the telecast had down even further from last year’s lows, although it is still above the 2008 ceremony hosted by Jon Stewart, which came in just shy of 32 million viewers.

Weeks long controversy over racial diversity had raised much anticipation around Chris Rock’s opening monologue, coupled with the fact that seasoned actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, was finally going to win his first Oscars – but these were not enough to boost television viewership.
