Obasanjo Slams ‘Selfish’ Leaders For Hindering Nigeria’s Growth, Progress

Olusegun Obasanjo-boys-scoutFormer Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday slammed those he labelled as selfish leaders, for slowing down the growth and progress of the country.

Chief Obasanjo, who made the observation when the leadership and members of the Scout Association of Nigeria paid him a courtesy visit at his Oke-Mosan Hilltop mansion in Abeokuta, Ogun State, also advised the current crop of leaders to make the interest of the citizenry paramount in their policies.

Mr. Obasanjo was Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 1999-2007. He was also a Military Head of State from 1977-1979.

During the visit, the former president was decorated as Messenger of Peace Ambassador for Africa.

Reacting to the honour, the elder statesman said it reminded him of when he became a Queen’s Scout, adding that for a leader to succeed, he must always be prepared at all times to face challenges, especially, unexpected ones.

“We need a scout spirit in our country not just for individual benefit alone but also for services to the nation”, he said. “Work collectively and provide the leadership that will make us get progress”.

Mr. Obasanjo further stated that the nation needs to work collectively with the leadership, which he stressed would make the nation progress in all spheres.

The former president assured the group that he would help it inform President Muhammadu Buhari to fix a date for his investiture as the Grand Patron of the association, which is automatic in line with the association’s constitution.

Speaking earlier, Chief Commissioner of Scout Association of Nigeria, Olusoga Sofola-Atibioke, said that the investiture of Chief Obasanjo as its ambassador was to help build a peaceful and formidable Africa with special focus on Nigeria.
