The election of Godswill Akpabio as the senator representing Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State, on Friday, was upheld by the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja.
The Senate minority leader’s election was challenged by Inibehe Okori of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The APC candidate had appealed the decision of the National and State Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal, which upheld the election of the former governor as the senator representing the District in the Senate.
Earlier, there were unconfirmed reports that the Appeal Court nullified the election of Sen. Akpabio and ordered re-run within 90 days.
Reacting to news of the Appeal Court judgment upholding his election, Akpabio said:
My election has just been upheld by the Court of Appeal. Thank you Nigerians. #GA
