On December 17, 1942, Buhari was born in Daura, Katsina State, to his father Adamu and mother, Zulaihat. He was Nigeria’s Head of State from December 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985 after overthrowing the government of President Shehu Shagari in a coup. He got overthrown also in a coup led by General Ibrahim Babangida in 1985.
Buhari went on to contest the 2003, 2007 and 2011 presidential elections but was defeated each time.
Buhari became the President of Nigeria and commander in chief of the Armed Forces in 2015 after defeating former President, Goodluck Jonathan in the March elections and was sworn into office on May 29.
Buhari became the first person to unseat an incumbent Nigerian president in democratic elections.
