An Indian bride in the Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh State, on Monday night called off her wedding after the groom failed to count beyond nine and answer some mathematical questions she threw at him.
The bride was said to have studied up to Class 8 and wanted to become a teacher.
After the wedding was cancelled, the girl’s family alleged that the groom was ‘illiterate’ and ‘mentally unfit’.
It was learnt that Srikrishna Babu Saxena, resident of Gulariapur village, had fixed the wedding of his daughter Khushboo to Omveer, son of Rajendra Singh, resident of village Saraia, Auraiya district.
However, when the marriage proceedings began, a friend of the bride informed her that her husband-to-be was unable to recite the wedding mantras properly.
Following this disclosure, she decided to confront Omveer, despite her parent’s attempt to dissuade her from doing so.
The Hindustantimes said the bride told her parents that she couldn’t get married to an illiterate person and when she asked the groom to count the coins, he couldn’t go beyond nine. Neither could he dial her mobile number nor was he able to tell the difference between 69 and 79.
After asking several questions, Khushboo came to the conclusion that her husband-to-be was ‘mentally unfit’ and called off the wedding.
The matter reached the panchayat (an elective council of about five members organized in the republic of India as an organ of village self-government) but the bride stuck to her decision not to get married to an ‘illiterate’.
