The Director, Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, LSCAC, Mrs Olaitan Otulana, gave the advice in Lagos after the stage presentation of Femi Osofisan’s “Fiddlers On A Midnight Lark” on Thursday.
According to the LSCAC boss, her advice to married couples was based on the content of the play, which was a satirical performance of the trend in society where husbands are unfaithful to their wives, leading to a breakdown in marriages.
Although there is no statistics to back up the rate of divorce in Nigeria, many are of the opinion that the number of broken marriages are on a steady increase in the country.
Speaking further on the stage play, Otulana said that the protagonist should not have equated herself with her husband by saying that she could compete with her husband in the game of infidelity.
”As mothers and wives, we must not equate ourselves with our husbands because we are meant to submit to them regardless of the situation”, she said, adding that “A responsible woman will not afford to bear the repercussions of being wayward in marriage”.
Describing mothers like a mirror to their children, Mrs. Otulana explained that whatever a woman does is bound to be imitated by her children and this, she said, can either lift them up or make them lose focus in life.
”The success of any marriage lies in the quality of children raised. We need to focus on the success of our children, which dictates our joy in the future”, she said.
While acknowledging that it could be very painful to have an unfaithful partner, Mrs. Otulana urged women to exercise patience and perseverance, pointing out that these attributes are necessary to absorb any shock from the ills from their marriages.
