Out of nowhere earlier today, British boy band One Direction dropped a new single, “Drag Me Down”. The track wasn’t announced, and came as a complete surprise to their legions of fans around the world. Many artists have been employing Beyoncé’s marketing tactic as of late, and 1D are sure to benefit sales and chart-wise from the shock of it all.
The song itself is more interesting than some of their previous singles, and it shows that even while still a boy band, the guys in One Direction can mature with their music. The track features a moment that could have featured the popular electronic drop (which has become something of a staple in pop music, ever since electronic dance music experienced a resurgence in popularity), but the producers subbed in guitars for synths, keeping to the style that has made this grouping a household name around the world. It’s fun enough, and it’ll surely perform well on the British charts, and in America it may have a day in the sun as well.
