Sunderland Fans Raise £22,000 In tribute To Newcastle Supporters Who Died On Flight MH17
Sunderland fans put their rivalry aside and raised money in tribute to Newcastle fans John Adler, 63, and Liam Sweeney, 28, who were on their way to watch their pre – season tour in New Zealand.
The supporters had initially planned to raise just £100 for a floral tribute in memory of the two supporters but thousands poured in and the total summed up to £22,000.
“The incredibly sad news that has emerged this week about two Newcastle fan aboard a Malaysian airliner who have passed has left us all shocked and deeply saddened.
Gary Ferguson, a sunderland supporter, who created the page wrote: “We may be Sunderland fans, who traditionally have deep rivalry with Newcastle, but there are things far more important than any football games.
Donating here will help pay for a floral tribute to those fans and to unity
between the two clubs.
Any extra money will be donated to a charity that has yet to be decided.
“Thank you for your time, effort and donations.
“RIP to John Alder and Liam Sweeney, who were both far too young.”
That was how it all began with donations pouring in.
