In its determination to contribute to the war against insurgency and criminality in the country, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has just taken delivery of an unspecified number of sniffer dogs from the United States of America (USA).
The Commandant General of the para-military agency, Dr. Ade Abolurin, who made the disclosure during a security meeting in Abuja with personnel of the corps from all the formations in the country yesterday, described them as highly sensitive dogs capable of
detecting bombs and ammunition, adding that he had already started training personnel to take control of the dogs.
His words: “Before now, when we brought in dogs, people looked at us as illiterate but we can all see what the dogs have been able to do over time, including recovery of ammunition, which human beings could not do.”
“We have to thank God for the military that extended hands of fellowship to us in terms of training. I am sure that you are quite aware that we have dogs from Russia, China, South Africa and many other places.
In fact, I want to inform you that we have taken delivery of new dogs just imported from the USA.
“They are majorly dogs that can detect and possibly recover ammunition and essentially fight criminality in the society. They are high sensitive dogs you can keep in the street to inform you what is happening around the area. They are dogs that could jump down from aircraft. We know their worth.
“I cannot tell you the numerical strength of the dogs we have imported as a matter of security strategy. We already have training programmes with the military and other security agencies. We are, however, doing this because we want an improvement in the current situation and to principally nip security breaches in the bud,” he said.
