Fifa vice-president and head of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) Julio Humberto Grondona has passed away aged 82.
After being admitted to hospital with a heart problem on Tuesday morning, Grondona’s condition deteriorated rapidly in the following hours and he was ultimately unable to overcome his fight with ill-health.
He had been in charge of the Argentine FA for 35 years and was responsible for the construction of the Ezeiza training complex, where the national side are now based.
Julio Humberto Grondona, FIFA’s Senior Vice President, the great Godfather of South American football and President of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) since 1979,will be proudly remembered since his mandate began.
Grondona was slated to retire in 2015, according to an announcement he made last year. He will be succeeded by Seguara, who will be in charge until 2015. Argentina will be cancelling the
first week of their “Apertura” season out of respect for Grondona.
